KAMPALA, UGANDA - Harriet has been operating a restaurant in the Kampala suburb of Kawempe that feeds 30 people daily. “I almost closed down my restaurant in the first 3 months of opening because of charcoal use. I was introduced to an improved stove by a client who offered it to me on a trial basis” Harriet says. Harriet previously spent 8,000 UGX (2.10 Euros) on charcoal per day, with her improved charcoal stove, she spends 4,000 UGX (1.05 Euros) on charcoal. With such savings Harriet has been to pay her childrens’ school fees and is able to invest invest 20,000 UGX (5.26 Euros) per week into a local investment club for women.
