Winfred is a house wife who cooks food for a family of five with her improved cookstove. She is very happy with her stove: before she used to spend 2,000 UGX (€0.52) on charcoal every day, now she spends 1,000 UGX (€0.26) a day, saving 50% on charcoal. She appreciates the one year guarantee on the stoves which is not offered by other stoves on the market. The stove also cooks fast, saving her time which she spends with friends and family.
Haawah has used improved cookstoves for the last two and a half years to cook food for her family of four. Originally, she thought the improved cookstoves were too expensive, but after experiencing the savings firsthand, she’s glad she made the investment. Previously, a sack of charcoal worth 65,000 UGX (€16.85) lasted two months, but now using improved cookstoves, she only needs to spend 40,000 UGX (€ 10.37) for the two months. This saves her 25,000 UGX (€6.50) every time she buys charcoal. With these savings, she is able to contribute to her children’s school fees and since her improved stoves cook faster, she is able to spend more time with her family.
Hanifah is responsible for cooking food for her husband and son. She owns two stoves: an improved cookstove and a clay cookstove. Although she bought the clay stove first, she rarely uses it because it consumes a lot of charcoal. She now relies primarily on her improved cookstove which she has had for the last two years. The stove is saving her a lot of money on charcoal: before she spent 10,000 UGX (€2.59) per week, and now she spends only 5,000 UGX (€1.29) every week. With an entrepreneurial mind, Hanifah says: “I invest all the savings I get from charcoal into my business to enable it to become bigger. In the future, I want to own a proper retail shop”
