This is Madame Peninah Odhiambo, Deputy Head Teacher at Moi Girls Secondary School near the Kibira slum in Nairobi.
There are over 1,500 young women who attend her boarding school. In November 2019, the school received an UltraFLO Impact Water system, capable of treating over 340,000 liters of water. This system adequately addresses the school’s demand for approximately 4,900 liters of safe drinking water every day.
Madame Peninah mentions the importance of the water purification system, "It gives us and parents confidence students will not fall sick. Before receiving the system, we had many cases of typhoid, and other water borne diseases. But now, we have not had any such cases. Many parents live in Kibira slum, and they cannot afford health costs when their child falls sick."
Madame Peninah further explains how it is helping with girls with their education. “With safe drinking water, we are seeing 100% attendance. Girls are not missing classes because they are sick from waterborne diseases. Safe water helps them perform better in class.”
Madame Peninah’s story illustrates how Impact Water is addressing SDG 3 Good Health and Wellbeing and SDG 4 Quality Education, SDG 6 Clean Water and Sanitation and SDG 13 Climate Action.
